What is NIL?

NIL stands for Name, Image, and Likeness.

NIL refers to a student-athlete’s ability to earn compensation for the use of their personal brand. This can include their name, image, social media presence, athletic performance, or overall influence within their community.

In simple terms, NIL allows college athletes to partner with businesses, promote products or services, appear in marketing campaigns, create sponsored content, host camps, sign autographs, and participate in other brand-related opportunities — all while maintaining their eligibility.

NIL is not about being famous. It's all about marketability. Every athlete has a unique audience, community, and story. Whether that audience is 500 people on campus or 50,000 online, there is value in authentic influence.

At its core, NIL is the intersection of athletics, branding, and business. It rewards professionalism, consistency, and alignment with the right partners.

For Division III athletes in particular, NIL often centers around local engagement — working with businesses in your community, building long-term relationships, and representing brands in a way that feels natural and credible.

Understanding NIL means understanding your value, your responsibilities, and the guidelines set by your institution and the NCAA. It is a professional space, and it requires thoughtful execution.

At Echelon Sports Collective, our role is to help athletes navigate this space with structure, clarity, and integrity.
